Anoice - Remmings (2006)
Anoice (pronounced "a noyce") is a six piece Japanese band that formed around 2004 in Tokyo. What I’ve always liked about Japanese music makers is that there are some really unique bands/artists out on those islands waiting to be discovered. Some of my favorites are Jack or Jive, Tujiko Noriko, See-Saw, Endless Dismal Moan, Teresa 11 and now Anoice. To actually describe this bands sound is one tough task and in fact there’s no way with words alone could I do such a thing. You really have to experience this music to possibly understand what its like. You need to turn the volume up, lie back, and take in every gorgeous note that comes out of your speakers as Anoice takes you to a place of exquisite grandeur.
If words must be spoken for you to understand, Anoice plays a type of post rock, neo classical, ambient music that’s unlike anything I’ve ever heard before. I can sense parts of Sigur Ros in here, perhaps Raison d'être, The Silver Mt. Zion, Mogwai, movie soundtracks, classical composers and so much more. The six members handle instruments like guitars, piano, synthesizers, programming, viola, bass guitar, mandolin, and drums.
I feel the most passionate about the song, ‘Liange,’ which is an absolutely breathtaking sorrowful five minutes. The piano and viola are quite simply immaculate during this song, with light percussion, and a mysterious ambient backdrop to the song that I just cannot bring myself to stop listening too. ‘The Three-Days Blow’ starts out in a very similar melancholic neo classical style as Liange, but as it nears its end the music seems to show a glimmer of light. While ‘Kyoto’ & ‘Asprin Music’ display more of the post rock side of the band, but while Asprin Music seems to be more upbeat Kyoto has a more mysterious sentiment to it. The five untitled pieces are where we get to see the more ambient side of the band and like everything else on this recording they are just stunning.
If what I’ve described above sounds like something you’d enjoy then please do check out this incredible Japanese band.
