Àrnica - Viejo Mundo (2009)
Àrnica is a Catalonia (Spain) based band which creates music in a diverse and mostly unique style of folk music. The bands debut album, 'Viejo Mundo' is an interesting take on the alpine folk style of music and it reminds me of bands like Sturmpercht, Sangre Cavallum and The Joy of Nature.
Viejo Mundo is an interesting album as the entire record is narrated along the way and apparently he tells his tales of travel, ancient Gods, wisdom of life, traditions and memories of war. Of course none of the words are in English, rather they are either in Spanish or Catalan (or maybe both), which of course I have no knowledge of. Although the majority of the words appear in spoken form there is also the inclusion of some background singing/chanting on a few songs, which adds a nice ritualistic like sentiment to the album. Also a range of instruments are used on this recording too; accordions, guitars, flutes and various percussion instruments.
All in all, Àrnica creates ritualistic, timeless and wild sounding folk music that will probably take a few listens before you'll fully enjoy it, but once you do you'll find that this is a fine album.
