Betray-Ed - Woods of Eternity (2009)

At first glance of the album's artwork/title, Betray-Ed's latest album Woods of Eternity appeared to be a promising, straight-forward folk/ambient release; to my surprise, the album roams through some of the broadest trails of ambient, neo-classical, and atmospheric metal, while scattering some black metal influence along its trail. Beautiful natural field-recordings are heard dimly lit under the music, and layers of complex guitar melodies are complimented by piano, vocals, and natural atmosphere . Some of the "heavier" songs may surprise a few listeners for their odd placement between a few of the ambient tracks; 'To Untamed Lands We Sail' is an example of just that, trapped between the elegant duel of instruments over water in 'Stranded Along the White Cliffs,' and the mysterious yet subdued 'Fog Over the Shoals.' The one and only aspect of the album that may be unappealing to some would be the smothered production and lackluster percussion in the majority of songs. Nevertheless, this album is surely a fun listen that could keep you company during a walk through the woods or peering through the valley.
