Hirpus - Ianuaria (2005)
Hirpus, the obscure and somewhat mysterious Italian band was born in the late 2001 when Marco (Apud Inferos) and Daniele (Mors Summa) began collaborating on an infusion of their ideological proclivities and sentiments toward historic nationalism in underground black metal. Hirpus was the moniker used by a conclave of warrior priests, devoted to mystical practices and living on the Soratte mountain ridge near ancient Rome. The word itself - Hirpus - is derived from Oscan, an Indo-European Italic language related to Latin, meaning wolf, an animal closely related to Mars (and Rome) in ancient Italic religions. Thus, Hirpus is conceptually an ode to the ancient Italic blood and its spiritual roots. Musically, the band is stylistically similar to Marco's efforts in Apud Inferos, but Hirpus' historically epic and at times NS-blackened assault is exceptionally unique and Italian while retaining the traditional black metal guise. While "Ianuaria" may not have been the most groundbreaking debut, the album and the band retain a dedicated convocation of fans, like myself, who look forward to further material.
