Black Breath - Heavy Breathing (2010)

As it stands I don't own nor have I heard many bands that fall into the whole crossover/thrash metal genre, but a very positive review a friend wrote and a quick trip over to youtube.com convinced me I had to get my hands on Black Breath's debut album, 'Heavy Breathing.'

Formed in Seattle, Washington back in 2006, this five piece quickly released a demo, followed by the debut EP, 'Razor to Oblivion' in 2008 before arriving at this most recent release last year. Consisting of aggressive classic sounding crusty hardcore styled vocals and screams, insane amounts of energy and anger, a heavily vicious sense of melodicism and a Swedish Sunlight Studio style riff tone similar to early Entombed and Dismember plus enough d-beats to please any hardcore punkers - Fuck yes, this debut absolutely kills!

The production of Heavy Breathing is exceptional with the ferocious chainsaws coming through as clear as day, the bass is heavy and vibrant, the drums are loud, raging and have some serious rumble to them, while the vocals are in your face and completely pissed off during the entire record. Needless to say it sounds great!

I really enjoy just about every song, but the speedy, hostile and quite catchy, 'Virus' & 'Fallen' have stuck with me as true favorites, while the instrumental title track or even the slower, 'Unholy Virgin' are first rate material. Most of the record though is fast and angry and at least for me it gets me completely charged up and, well, it isn't long before I'm head banging like a motherfucker to this beast and wishing I too was onstage screaming into faces off everyone looking up at me.

In the end I've found Heavy Breathing to be just excellent! Its received constant play rotation from me and will continue to do so when I need a boost and since I'll be seeing them live next Friday all I can say is, bring it on!
