In Defence @ Quarters Rock 'n Roll Palace 2.09.13

Since I drank too much and effectively ruined most of the memories I could have taken away from this local gig I figure I'll keep this one short and to the point just to give the fine bands that played a little extra push.

The Cold Beyond:
TCB are no strangers around this 'zine o' mine, but if the name doesn't immediately stand out than just wade through some of my older reports on their albums and gigs as well as an interview. The band debuted two newly wrote songs during this short opening set and although I'd already watched the guys play them at their rehearsal place the previous weekend it seemed best to catch them onstage where it really counts. With both stretching over the ten minute marker these new cuts are among the longest in their arsenal. A late start and some technical issues did plague the band, but I was none the less impressed with their three songs. Take a listen to the song below, because its by far the bands most bleak and experimental song to date while still staying true to their core sound.

Festerfuck:
These lads have been playing out for a few years now and have built up a reputation as being one of or maybe the best grindcore band from these parts. Personally, I'm not into the grind thing at all, (well... really old shit from the 80's is alright) but after already putting back a few beers I found myself enjoying some Festerfuck. Its certainly nothing I'd listen to on CD, even though there's probably some humor and what not involved there, but at least live they were fun.

Nuclear Hellfrost:
After more drinks and various short conversations with peoples, it was time for Nuclear Hellfrost. Featuring some of the guys from Nak'ay, NH plays a type of grindy blackthrash that was nothing short of being entirely too rad. The bands set was short, but I seem to remember being pushed around a bit, which probably means others were enjoying what they do too. You should too.

In Defence:
From Minnesota, In Defence played Milwaukee a few months ago and were met with a favorable response (or so I'm told). In any case, these guys bashed out a energetic and quite fun set of crossover style thrash, which resulted in quite a bit of headbanging and pushing around the small venue. The singer was also rather amusing in-between songs. I think their set ended slightly early because the guitarist got caught up in the moshing and got hurt or because we were getting too violent, beyond that much, I can't tell you because alcohol had already taken control. Good bands and good people made for good times and a good night.
