Birthed earlier this year by an anonymous female, also of anonymous origin, 'Final Nights,' the debut EP from Umbrose, is partially based off of the creators travels through Finland during this past summer as well as a video game.
Opening with the sounds of heavy rain fall and a distant howl, 'How Many Winters,' eventually kicks in with a lone drum beat intermingled with piano and keyboard orchestration for the first few minutes. The song generally continues with the same pattern for its seven minute duration, though its rather atmospheric and melancholy in its delivery, and as it draws to its conclusion a sampled male voice cuts in. 'Crushed Like Velvet (Velour)' introduces a more active percussive vibe to it, almost sounding reminiscent of something Ulver may have done during their 'Perdition City' days, while, 'MMN' initially features far-flung carnival music, before long diving into a similarly styled electronic vibe, with the occasional sensual female voice chiming in about the theme park ride itself.
The final two songs, 'The Crying Mask' and its remix, 'Symphony of the Sewer Rats (The Crying Mask Alternate),' bring about a more whimsical sentiment, almost reminding me of something out of a Tim Burton movie, or at least something composer Danny Elfman might come up with.
All in all, the EP clocks in at about thirty minutes and throughout its journey offers a variety of emotions; everything ranging from melancholy to the mysterious and then just plain weird, too. Perhaps 'Final Nights' only fault is that its hard for me to pick a clear cut favorite as it lacks a sense of catchiness and hooks, but on the other hand it does offer a half hour of chill-out, Ulver-ish, electronic and neo classical styled music that's ultimately hard for me to resist. So, in other words, its best listened to as a whole.
I'm curious to see where Umbrose goes from here with this project and eagerly await further developments of the project as well as, with hopefully a full-length in the not so distant future.
