Magda, released last year in September, is the first effort from New Jersey based three-piece, Hercyn. Consisting of a single twenty four minute number, Magda, is an ambitious start for these guys.
Opening with the sounds of rushing water, a lone acoustic guitar soon enough emerges amongst the waves, while the drums, bass and guitar slowly build up the song in a post-metal-ish style. By almost the six minute mark, the song takes a darker direction when the hissing screams come into play, and musically it continues in a black metal vein for the next several minutes, before coming somewhat back to the post-ish style with a soaring guitar solo around the fourteen minute mark. The song reaches its fastest measures shortly thereafter followed by some of the songs most dramatic screams, too, before somewhat winding down and coming to a stunning conclusion.
Between being richly atmospheric and characterized with tons of fantastic riffs, Magda is quite the journey to undertake. A lot happens within its twenty four minute duration, genres switch and moods change, which makes it hard to represent through word, and can only be heard to understand. Generally though vibes of Agalloch, Deafheaven, Fen, Wolves in the Throne Room and Drudkh resonate through this impressive debut effort from, Hercyn.
I should also mention that the song is produced rather well, still underground for sure, but no lo-fi black metal silliness here, and with audible bass guitar lines it adds that much needed low end that these bands often overlook.
Notably, Magda also comes in a jewelcase, with a four paneled booklet with all lyrics and wrapped in twine. Not to mention that the artwork, both the cover and traycard is quite nice, too.
If interested, the demo can be purchased via their Bandcamp site, for just $5.
