Whitby Bay - Unextinguishable Candle (2013)

Named after the seaside port town in North Yorkshire, which is haunted by age old myths of ghost sailors lost at sea; Whitby Bay is a three piece band from London, England, which has been active since 2010. Unextinguishable Candle represents the bands first release, which comes in the form of a 7" record on blue vinyl.

Unextinguishable Candle kicks off the A Side of the 7" on a speedy pummeling note with repeative riffs and raspy growled vocals, which isn't too far off from early Ulver meanderings, as well as, other crazed Norwegian filth from the early 90's. The production is distinctively crude, but hardly a typically raw sound, and perhaps akin to something rehearsal-ish in style, while still having all the instruments readily heard. Black Cape is found on the flipside and although similar initially, it has more flair to it as it progresses and dare I even say catchiness within its creeping wicked framework.

As it goes with 7" records, I'm offered just a snippet of the bands work (about 7 minutes), but what I hear definitely sounds promising for the planned full-length they've got coming out in late 2014.
