Woodchuck Hard Cider - Cellar Series: Chocolate

Oh Jesus! Apple cider and chocolate? This is going to be fucking great, right? I just don't know. The concept had me scratching my head, and honestly walking back to the shelf at the liquor store and setting it back down twice. Eventually, I thought, "Well I used to love ciders so why not?" Let's do this! Be brave with me!

Cellar Series Chocolate poured out a bold bronze color with a nearly foamless head, which vanished within seconds. The first smell was, well, different than any alcoholic beverage I've ever sniffed before. Scents of crisp apples intermingling with deep chocolate notes telling my nose this is going to be something special. I take the first sip and... well, ok... that was really, really different. Initially my tongue said yummy, but then some strange aftertaste sneaked in that I didn't expect. The taste is exactly as my nose had hinted at - apples and chocolate. A few more swigs and I'm warming up to this as it is as usual quite crisp and refreshing and the underlining chocolate bits definitely make it one unique beverage.

As I worked my way through the bottle I did also notice a caramel taste, which when I thought about it, it tasted exactly like a caramel apple dipped in chocolate. Annoyingly, I got something of an allergic reaction by the time I finished the beverage as my bottom lip felt itchy. That really, really shouldn't happen when drinking alcohol!

I guess its safe to say that I wont be buying this again, but it was an interesting try either way. The 22 oz. bottle carried a 6.7% ABV and a lot of sugar, too (yeah, caloric info is there). It only cost me $4.49, which surely isn't breaking the bank, but I think I would have much sooner picked up the stout I'd had in my hands originally.

For the sugar addicts and those that can't get enough of cider, well, this ones for you. I haven't had much of an interest in them for a while, but something new seemed like reason enough to try 'em again. I'll stick to my stouts and porters, thank you very much.
