Aardia - Fairy Tales from Beyond (2002)

Let me be the first to tell you that there’s no feeling greater than going out to your mail box and finding an unexpected package from someone you don’t know, and not to mention having this package come from a country that’s a thousand some miles away from you. In less of course the package is from Afghanistan and the anthrax virus is enclosed, but luckily that wasn’t the case here. What was enclosed in my package was the debut MCD from Sweden’s atmospheric dark ambient project Aardia.

Now let me tell you about Aardia, because they aren’t your typical dark ambient band. The music shown here on ‘Fairy Tales from Beyond’ is far superior to artists like Mortiis, Burzum, or Lord Wind. The music of Aardia sounds more like something that could have been used in a soundtrack to a medieval themed movie or maybe even a role-playing video game. The three characters with swords in hand about to strike the evil creature on the cover artwork lead me to thinking this even more.

The four songs here really are quite elaborate, and by these four songs alone Aardia has placed them selves far above any of their peers. Although all the songs are great the absolute standout is the title track ‘Fairy Tales from Beyond.’ This song is extremely epic, and features some beautiful keyboard work. The third song ‘The Wandering’ sounds like it would have fit in perfectly on Basil Poledouris masterwork ‘Conan the Barbarian’ soundtrack.

The only real downfall about this recording is the total length, which is just a few seconds over 15 minutes. Other wise though there’s really nothing that I can say is negative about this release. Aardia has created something both unique and very enjoyable. I eagerly await the debut album. http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/77/aardia.html
