Back in the early 90’s when I was first getting into metal Anthrax was obviously one of the first bands I heard of, though for whatever reasons it wasn’t until a few years later that I actually ‘heard’ the band. Even all these years later I’ve only heard three Anthrax albums and out of that bunch their sophomore release, ‘Spreading the Disease’ has always remained my favorite.
Released in 1985 this record introduced new singer Joey Belladonna to the band who brought his fabulous voice to a genre that was filled with screamers, and thus elevated Anthrax among the thrash metal ranks. Spreading features some truly exceptional songs such as the powerful, ‘Lone Justice’ or ‘The Enemy,’ which are the type of songs that just beg you to sing along with, but it’s the fast hard hitting thrash songs like, ‘S.S.C.,’ ‘Aftershock’ and ‘Gung-ho’ that rev you up and keep you headbanging harder and harder.
Both Scott and Dan’s guitar leads are commanding, catchy and generally great, while Charlie’s drum work is diverse and fluid sounding while the aforementioned excellent vocals make this one classic metal record. Of course many people consider, ‘Among the Living’ as the pinnacle of Anthrax’s career, but somehow this one was always far more memorable to me. So, take this trip back to past; when Scott Ian had a full head of hair and metal and Anthrax was at their finest.
