Since the re-formation of my cute little zine there hasn't been one damn worthy concert in my area. Likewise its been a long time since there's really been any good shows at Vnuk's Lounge, but Goatwhore coming to town is always a must for me and so I made sure to attend.
Memories Wither: These guys are a local unsigned band from Wisconsin, which prior to even hitting the stage my friends warned me of their foul sound and shitty playing. In doubt and willing to give most things a fair chance I went to the front of the stage. I'm not really sure how to describe these guys, but its definitely not the death or thrash metal they mention on their myspace page. To my ears it just sounded like another band playing bland, tuneless metal with growled vocals. The kind of stuff kids listen to before they discover real metal. Music without soul or feeling. Yeah that kind of stuff. Curiously they had two guitarists, one of which seemed to really favor Dimebag Darrell, yet for some reason their music had no guitar solos or even really any interesting riffs at all. The bass player and his lame bass dance was ripped from the Korn book of stage etiquette as well. Meh. I wasn't impressed, but they at least got me warmed up for a good night of concert photography.
Enfold Darkness: Up next for the evening was Enfold Darkness from Nashville, Tennessee. Although these guys were completely unknown to me I must admit I was quite impressed with their set. I haven't heard any of their studio material, but at least in the live setting the band sounded fairly similar to Arsis or other melodic and slightly technical death metal bands. There may have also been a very slight black metal influence to these guys music as well. The band brought a lot of energy to the stage especially their somewhat odd short haired curly mustached lead singer who must have drank an arm full of Red Bull's before hitting the stage. Speaking of drinking, before the band even finished their set a member of the crowd offered the singer a swig from his beer, which he happily accepted and gulped down. Anyway, I was quite impressed with these guys sound and will most likely look for their album in the near future.
Goatwhore: Lastly the band we all came to see, Goatwhore. This is actually the third time I've seen these guys and just like their previous concerts they were excellent. As always I absolutely loved the amount of energy and rage these guys brought to the stage and frankly I find it hard to resist their blackened death metal attack. They ripped through a number of cuts from their new album, 'Carving out the Eyes of God,' as well as my personal favorite, 'Alchemy of the Black Sun Cult,' which always gets me charged up like you wouldn't even believe. Besides that I admire the fact that their singer Ben is a fabulous front man and really knows how to get the crowd going through his very animated stage presence. Another great moment was near the end of their set when the guys were trying to get someone in the crowd to buy them shots of Jäger. Wonder if they ever got 'em? Anyway as usual Goatwhore was flawless and a pleasure to see once again. If these guys come to your town definitely check them out. You won't regret spending your evening headbanging with them.
