Akerbeltz – Tabellae Defixionum (2001)

Originally wrote & published on January 20th, 2003

From the Iberian Peninsula (Spain) comes the necro black metal band Akerbeltz. Akerbeltz is for the most part a solo band with some small contributions (lyrics) from his wife Lillith. The music of Akerbeltz is easily comparable to black metal of the early 90's. Bands such as Darkthrone, Satyricon, Immortal, Burzum come to mind when listening to this recording. As usually with early 90's sounding black metal the production is raw, and Akerbeltz is no exception. This is certainly not the worst production I’ve heard from a band of this style, but the production used fits the music perfectly. As usual with old school sounding black metal we get lots of great guitar playing, brutal drumming, raspy/grim vocals, and a dark cold atmosphere from this album.

Akerbeltz vocal style actually reminds me of Abbath of Immortal a little bit. Although I think Akerbeltz vocals sound much more grim then Abbath could ever do. The drums are good and are almost always brutal, but I think the double bass sounds a little strange on this recording.

It's hard to choose a favorite song from this album since there all really good. My personal favorite is probably the 3rd song 'The Forest is my Haunt' because of the killer opening to this song, and the way it’s blended together with the previous song. Overall quite an enjoyable album from Akerbeltz and to put it simple if you like black metal of the early 90's this band and album is definitely worth your time.
