Alberion - I Passi Di Liù (2008)
The Italian band Albireon has been together since 1998 and during these past ten years they've mostly explored a neo folk-ish styled musical path. Their older songs primarily consisted of voice, acoustic guitar, keyboards, and sometimes flute, however there latest release 'I Passi Di Liù' on Palace of Worms Records is something completely different.
On this late 2008 release Albireon's style is more within an ambient style since the music is very calm and fragile the whole way through with just light synths, occasional piano, various odd percussions, and ghostly echoing vocals. The effect is a very dreamlike experience, or perhaps more like a transition phase between being within a dream and then waking up. I wouldn't hesitate to think that the person on the cover of this album is experiencing this. Its an odd trip indeed when listening to this album and would most likely be interesting if experienced under some sort of mind altering substances.
While the album does have its strong dreamy qualities that I can certainly appreciate, what it generally lacks completely is any sort of memorable melodies or catchy vocal lines. Thus in a way the whole ten songs sort of bleed together and sound like one long composition. Of course its not necessarily a bad thing, but it requires the listener to take the trip many times before they'll be able to tell the ten songs apart. Nevertheless this is decent release and an interesting new path for Albireon.
