A Forest - The Spirit of the Forest (To Bleed Northern Spirit) (2003)

The strangely named ‘A Forest’ hails from Italy and plays some old school raw black metal. I received this advance tape for their debut album, which will be released by the end of the summer. A Forest is a duo consisting of M. on bass & guitar and Mayhem handling the drums, vocals, and lyrics. The bands music of choice is harsh raw black metal in the fashion of early Darkthrone, Graveland, and maybe even Beherit or Ildjarn. The vocals have an original touch to a extent, but do tend to remind me of Judas Iscariot at times. So if you’re familiar with any of those bands I've mentioned then you know your getting some filthy black metal here.

The seven songs the band present here are decent there’s no doubt about it, but the fact that they strive for the rawest production imaginable their brand of black metal may turn some people off. Only one of the songs had lyrics available and they were about the forest so this leads me to believe there other lyrics are probably about similar topics and not the usual BM poetry. Probably my favorite song overall is the first track ‘Wolf Spirit,’ which opens up this release quite well. The second track is an instrumental, but is also rather catchy. The final song on this release is a long ambient track that just trudges along with really not much excitement and eventually there’s the sound of someone walking though ‘a forest.’

A decent release but it’s a little bit on the short side, and the production could use some work. Still well worth checking out for the underground freaks that love raw black metal.
